GOOD:
-The de-aging effect on Nick Fury and Phil Coulson overall looks pretty real to me.
-Good at delivering the 90s vibe.
-Goose the cat. Do I need to explain?
-The humour was great, especially the fish out of water jokes.
-I thought the story of the movie works, with the whole Carol-trying-to-find-out-who-she-really-is kind of thing.
-You can see where the villain Talos is coming from in his intentions and action.
-Biggest one: anytime that Carol Danvers and Nick Fury are put together in the same scene. The chemistry between the two is great!
-I think that Captain Marvel works as both an MCU film - given the various MCU connections it makes throughout - and it’s own movie.
BAD:
-I thought Ronan and Korath are felt kinda forced into the movie. They come and go relatively fast. I feel like they’re just there to tell the audience “Hey, you remember these guys from Guardians of the Galaxy, right?”
-A lot of the action wasn’t very good. Either I can’t tell what’s going on, or it’s uncreative. It’s quite unfortunate because the MCU usually delivers good action.
-In the final battle, a 90s pop song is dropped in there for some reason. It was quite distracting.
-Really? THAT’S how Nick Fury lost his eye? LAME!!!
-Biggest one: Brie Larson was probably the worst part of the movie. Yes, she did develop to some degree by the end of the movie, and had great chemistry with some of the other characters (cough) Nick Fury (cough), but overall, she was somewhat uncharismatic, mundane, and sometimes didn’t feel like a real person. That’s unfortunate because we’re supposed to root for the LEAD CHARACTER of this movie, but with that kind of character presentation, we can’t really do that.
Final verdict: Despite the political controversy surrounding and hit-or-miss marketing, I thought Captain Marvel wasn’t as bad as people might think before watching it. Overall, the wack action, Brie Larson’s sluggish performance, and lack of creativity prevents Captain Marvel from being a GREAT movie. However, the 90s vibe, interesting story and the great Carol Danvers-Nick Fury chemistry largely compensates for it. This is probably one of the lower tier MCU movies, but it was still not too shabby.
I’ll give Captain Marvel a 7/10.
