Despite what critics may complain about, this movie is a gut-wrenching yet incredible watch. With some of the strongest and most painfully realistic acting I have ever witnessed, Holland’s performance alone is enough to warrant a view, and though the story does not explore the characters as deeply as some may want, I believe that only adds to the painful realism of this movie. You don’t have to know the characters’ backstories for you to understand and empathise the struggles that they go through. The Russo brothers manage to direct some of the most graphic depictions of drug abuse, war and PTSD without romanticising or overdoing it.
The film is both a dramatic yet tragically mundane story that all who can stomach it should most certainly watch!
