If you like musicals and have never watched this version you have missed an ageless wonderful movie. It touches lightly on WW2, and racial prejudice not to mention the wonderful music. Wonderful.

I read it as a child around 1958 and it was my favourite book for a time. Oh to be doing the same. However probably hard to relate to now with all the social changes.

The message is correct, that society is cruel, values and rewards the worst. The fact that the actors are not family names adds to the movie. It is very thought provoking but runs out of steam at the end however it is well worth watching. Not a classic but solid. I enjoyed it.

It finely balances the iniquity of segregation and the temptation to exploit the period. A serious subject, well acted, with humour which also highlights the Italian stereotype of the period. Good movie.
