I have been a hardcore Godzilla fan for well over a decade now, and I can easily say that King of the Monsters is probably the best Godzilla film of them all. I went into the film with four friends (one a bigger Godzilla fan than I, the others barely versed), having heard all these complaints about bad characters and a poor plot. I came out of it wondering what the hell those critics were smoking. I rather liked all the characters, as did my four friends, with Ken Watanabe getting a fantastic heart-to-heart with Godzilla, probably my favorite scene in the entire movie. While the plot can be convoluted at times, the ideas it is putting forth are both interesting and well explored.
This film is a love-letter to Godzilla fans. The music being reimagined versions of older Godzilla themes was very pleasing: I was giddy when I heard the orchestral remix of Mothra's hatching song. Bear McCreary did an excellent job. They clearly understand their source material as well, with all ideas about the monsters being modern twists of Godzilla lore. The action scenes are among the best I've ever seen, being nearly indescribable in their scale and spectacle, managing to truly capture the feel of Kaiju.
Please, just go and see this film, it is just so amazing, I promise you that this movie obliterates expectations. I can only hope that people will realize this over time, because they are currently being misled by critics, which should become apparent when you look at the audience score
