#Karnan - one of the best movies in Dhanush's already stellar career. He keeps delivering gems with each movie and doesn't seem to be slowing down.
Mari Selvaraj delivers another excellent movie - although, deep down, I still love his debut movie, Pariyerum Perumal, more because it ended on a realistic note.
There are several parallels between both movies and it's nice to note such details - Pariyerum Perumal shows a teenage boy who realises the extent of caste oriented discrimination & oppression when he joins a college. But he feels it to his bone only when his dog is killed in the name of caste.
Similarly, Karnan shows the plight of a donkey beautifully. The entire storyline of the donkey can be compared with the storyline of the protagonist - how he is helpless in a caste oriented system and how he yearns for the freedom to chase his & his fellow people's dreams. He feels free only when he realises that he has to fight back to get basic rights & needs.
Karnan shows how people in lower strata had to and have to still fight for basic necessities and rights. The oppression shown in the movie in the name of caste is gut wrenching.
Mari also gives a parallel to the epic story Mahabharatha by naming several of his characters as Duryodhanan, Abhimanyu, Draupathi, etc. The supporting cast delivers their respective roles effortlessly - Lal, Rajisha Vijayan, Natarajan Subramaniam, Yogi Babu, Gouri G. Kishan, Lakshmi Priyaa Chandramouli. Mari made sure that the rest of the supporting cast were actual villagers from that locality in order to retain the slang and flavour of that particular locality. However, I wish Rajisha and Gouri's characters were merged into a single role - Rajisha doesn't have too much scope to perform other than be the protagonist's eye candy.
However, the show stealer, according to me, is definitely Natarajan Subramaniam. If people hated Ramya Krishnan in Padayappa, they will definitely hate Natarajan for delivering one of his best roles till date. The police station scene still gives me shivers. Hope he continues to choose good roles.
Pariyerum Perumal had a realistic dialogue in the end - "Enaku theriyum sir. Neenga neengala irukura varaikum, naan naaiya thaan irukanum nu neenga ethir paarkara varaikum, inga ethumae maarathu. Appadiyae thaan irukum" (I know sir. Until you guys continue to be same, and until you guys continue to treat us like dogs, there won't be any change here. It will remain the same).
Similarly Karnan had two hard hitting dialogues -
1) "Enga thirumbinaalum evanavadhu oruthan marachutu irukaan" (Wherever I turn, someone is there blocking my way / progress)
2) "Eppadiyavadhu pozhachu kedandha podhumnu irukku paaru namma nenappu, andha nenappu dhaan poora payaluvalum namma thala mela parangalla vekkuranuvo" (Loosely translated - The thought that it is okay to survive in any manner, invites others to oppress us)
I couldn't think much after watching this movie. The sarcasm which I showed in my childhood when my dad mentioned that he had to walk around 20-30 kms just to attend primary school and had to study under street lights to complete daily school reading. Despite having all facilities in the city, we take everything for granted. There are bigger problems around us than our laughable whims and fancies.
Overall a truly, memorable watch - 4.5/5
