One of the best movies I’ve seen in the past decade. From the haunting soundtrack/sound effects in the opening scene to the director’s mastery of the ability to build a scene’s emotional power (repeatedly) Sicario delivers an extremely powerful cinematic experience. Covering topical (and disturbing) issues the film leaves you with more questions (and perhaps answers however uncomfortable they may be) about the state of the ‘war on drugs’ and mission creep by various agencies, Sicario is both relevant and powerful. As usual del toro delivers a phenomenal performance as a ruthelsssly efficient and mysterious foreign assassin (?) and brolin is perfectly cast as CIA operative who’s jaded by the fact that traditional ‘legal’ methods of combating this ‘war’ have failed and accepts the gray area in which he operates.
Sicario leaves one permanently affected. The uncomfortable reality is that this film is likely much closer to reality than the public is aware of (perhaps intentionally). Can’t recommend enough.
