I just watched the first episode of Fate: The Winx Saga. Let me say this was not what I expected. This does contain SPOILERS, so if you want to watch this and haven't watched the first episode, please ignore this post. Note: this review has a lot of comparisons between the live action and the original. I was not going to watch this tv show, since I know it will not be like from the original Winx Club TV Show; but, I wanted to give it a try. I might watch the second episode, but that seems unlikely. This show is a good as a stand-alone, not a remake of the original.
My ratings:
- 1 star for comparison of the original.
- 3 stars for the actors and actress talent.
- no stars for the characters
- Overall rating for the show, BASED ON THE FIRST EPISODE, is 2 and a half stars.
I do not like the gore in the first scene. I grown up watching Winx Club as a kid, seeing bloody, horrific, scenes of this remake, I was not pleased, nor enjoyed it. I do like how they had Stella's ring, which is related with the original. I liked how they kept the schools name and Stella's world of origin. I do not like how there is no wings. When I think of fairies, I think of someone with wings, unless its a different type of fairy, like Puck; however, I found it interesting how they changed it by saying fairies had evolved and do not have the ability to transform (or lost the ability).
As for the characters, it is said that they do not have Tecna in the show and Brandon (where in the first season of the original Winx Club was called Sky, as a disguise, since he didn't want people to know that he was a prince (to get out of the spotlight)). The characters cursed a lot, which this show is not kid friendly. When the characters use their power, their eyes change color, color depending on what power they have. These characters, compared to the original, seems mean and rude. I think they had chosen a great actress to play Bloom. But, her character for this spinoff does not know that she was adopted, which the original she does know she was adopted. Her and her mom does not get along with each other, which is different from the original. Her parents seems she does not know she has powers, which from the original, they do know before she attends Alfea. The actress who plays Aisha (or if you watched the 4kids version, Layla), is very talented. In my opinion, she is one of the best actress in the whole tv show (at least the first episode). Stella: her powers are weird. She says her powers are "mental", where in the original, is sun. Flora: Actress seems very talented and I think she is good for the part. But, I do not like how she is has different ethnic demographics. In the tv show, I thought her ethnic background would be Latina or Italian (where the Winx Club originated from Italy). Musa: empath power. In the original, she has music powers. I think in this remake she shows it, but I could be mistaken. Specialists: in the original, it was all men. But I am glad to see that they had broken the stereotypes and added women, good addition. "Burned Ones": do not like this addition, but good to bring viewers in to watch this show who likes something scary. Beatrix: I think she is a witch. In the original TV show, they called the three witches (Icy, Stormy, and Darcey) "Trix". I liked, or at least assumed, that they had combined these characters in one person.
Overall, I do not like the negative energy. The fairies powers are very witchy and lost the sense of fairy (well, compared to fairy from the original).
