So I watched the first episode of Rateched last night. It was awful, and so far from Ken Kesey's depiction of her. If they wanted to make this story they should have just named her something else. When you use a named charter from literature, you have to accept all the baggage and expectations that they bring. Big Nurse was part of the machine the machine that RPM (get the initials) was fighting. Maybe it gets better, but from reading other reviews it doesn't. It was weird for weirdness, it did not further the story. The place setting was all wrong. They called it a state mental institution, but they didn't have state funding? It was opulent? It all seemed so forced. I don't know if the Kesey family signed off on this, but it is really far from my understanding of Big Nurse.
I always thought of Big Nurse as a kindred sprit of Judge Worm from The Wall, as part of the institutional machine, that grinds up the individual and makes them fit into the neat round holes.
I'll probably give the rest of the series a miss.
