A good story woven from subverting and mashing-up a bunch of tropes from YA fiction. It reads like Rick Riordan but with not as many jokes and puns. The danger and romance doesn't feel forced. There is sexual tension without the sex, and violence without the explicit gore (which is appropriate for the target audience). The ending was completely predictable but that actually felt satisfying in a sort of "I told you so!" way. You won't like this story if you are homophobic, or if you want something really deep, but it's a good popcorn-worthy adventure if you like the idea of modern culture and social media, in a world where there are magical creatures, and spells instead of guns.
