Strong, independent, and thoroughly unapologetic this richly reimagined Malificent has become one of my favorite Disney live action prequel-style remakes of a classic villain. Malificent has long been my favorite Disney character. I have always suspected she'd gotten a bad rap somewhere. In this flick we learn what that was. Deep betrayal, a rape-like assault (Jolie gives us a particularly poignant portrayal of the post assault Malificent) and the burdens of leadership shape the behavior of our Queen of the Fairies. Her love for Aurora is the ultimate twist and is a deeply satisfying one. I've returned to this movie many timea over the last couple of years and am deeply moved, delighted, and ultimately comforted by the story, the acting, the colors, and the characters.
