I've a similar upbringing in the sense of emotional abuse and subsequently found myself in endless abusive relationships. I could very much relate to the battle internally of trying to find yourself, whilst still stuck in the mire that's all around you.
The main character, Alex is exactly that, strong and determined one moment, and falling into old patterns the next.
The series shows the endless problem faced by women trying to make it by themselves when they are little to no support around them, and can't even rely on a parent for support.
It's hard breaking to watch.
In the end Alex's love for her daughter and determination to get away from all the chains holding her down sees her into a new chapter.
There's alot of criticism for the show, but this is entertainment after all. And not everyone's story.
Some people have it much worse than others, but everyone has a battle to fight.
I found it touching and tough to watch at times. But a story about a young mother overcoming adversity to pursue a better future is heartwarming, and those criticizing the characters use of government aid miss the whole point. These survivors need the aid to build better life's to pay into a system to help victims in the future.
How else is an abused women, with no stable support, homeless without a penny supposed to make it on her own without a little help in the beginning!
I found the lacking emotion sometimes in Alex character odd, but then remembered the period in my life where I was so exhausted emotionally I had shut down and was just in survival mode. And so if that's the actress's motivation then I get it.
The chemistry she has with the little girl is fantastic and truly lovely to watch on screen.
