Goodness gracious what a great game. It honestly reminded me a lot of some of the tomb raider games. I liked the freedom to explore different planets early on. Building up your abilities both in battle and exploring. Especially fond of being able to start over right at the point of your death in the easier mode. Graphics were so so. Like Cere’s wide eyes for the entire campaign. Meanwhile Greez you can even see his age lines.
Overall I had more qualms with the game than I expected. While the maps are cool, there isn’t as much of an open world (on each planet) as I was expecting. Instead they are all pathways. The levels were a nice touch though.
Then there’s the campaign. I was hoping for side quests as well but found none. However the introduction to each character as well as the databank for all the creatures and characters was very neat and useful.
I know these issues are more personal problems than anything else because many games play through a campaign and then that’s it, along with “exploring 100%” and collecting all the collectables. I’m just hoping that after I explore each planet 100% and collect everything that that’s not all.
Graphics. I have a 55” 4K Ultra TV and set the game as such however at times the light from the lightsaber would expand and it looked like I had a giant rectangle as a sword. Along with the rest of the graphics still being blocky more-so in the cutscenes. As I said before, Cere looks like not much time was spent developing the visual character however a lot of time developing her story. Meanwhile Greez and Merrin have an extreme amount of detail. Even the Mantis has a great deal of detail in the cables on the walls and the cockpit.
Gameplay, you gain many abilities along the way as well as BD-1 gaining a ton himself. But the controls are extremely fine tuned. If you are sliding down a slope and aim slightly too far to one side you miss a rope or a wall run. If you aim behind you as you do a combo move while fighting sometimes he’ll turn and do the combo move that way and sometimes Cal won’t. I tried changing around my controller settings and nothing changed in gameplay. However you can still work around these issues as long as you don’t mind dying many times.
I know this review feels unfinished. But as a whole, the game is quite nice. I love the customization of the lightsaber as well. The storyline is well written and gives good backstories. The customization of BD-1’s skins as well as the Mantis and a few others is quite cool as well. If you plan on getting this game don’t have high expectations. If it were me going back I would rent it instead of buying it.
