Well. If I could give it no stars then believe me I would.
Being a child of the 80s i was buzzing to see the original film with all the action stars I had grown up watching. It was cheesy but did not disappoint and the sequel (much to my suprise) was an even better film. The 3rd however showed that there really wasn't a very long shelf life on this franchise.
The the 4th was released and I have just got round to watching it after being hesitant for so long after seeing the trailer before it was released......
A HEAVILY diminished cast list that doesn't have even nearly the star power of the other films was already a black mark on the film before I had even watched it.
(SPOILER) The decision to remove Stallone and put Megan Fox in his leadership role for most of the film was a very early indicator of the upcoming quality of the rest of the film due to her incredibly obvious lack of talent and lack of any real screen presence. The fact that his death was faked blah blah was pretty predictable given that, for the most part, he IS the franchise and his so called death looked too cheap and easy to be a genuine main character death.
The plot itself as flimsy at best and wasn't remotely engaging after the first 10 minutes of the film and I often found myself going on my phone for a few minutes as the film did nothing at all to keep my attention.
My biggest criticism and my God it is a massive massive one, is the CGI. I have watched hundreds of films and I struggle to remember one where the CGI has been so bad it makes you physically cringe. The whole of the film consisted of terrible green screen that they blended with a few practical effects. The first 2 films at least didn't skimp on the practical and there was literally no need for this one to rely so heavily on CGI given it's $100,000,000 budget. God knows how they spent all that money if this is what they camle up with.
Most of the film was almost as if they had photoshopped real actors into a low budget cartoon. The idea of CGI is to create digital images etc that are supposed to make the viewer think that they're real. This took that idea, pulled its pants down and laughed at it.
I could forgive a lackluster plot if there was a decent bit of star power, a decent story and good practical effects but this steaming pile of disappointment just made me want to smash up the t.v.
If you haven't already seen it and come across this review before you decide to watch it.... please take this little pearl of wisdom and take note of it....
Don't bother watching it.
