Sia could have cast an autistic actor as the part of Music, but instead chose to cast a neurotypical person, Maddie Ziegler. I have no problem with Maddie Ziegler as an actress, but an autistic person would have been more fit for an autistic role. She ignored the anger of the community that she was supposedly trying to represent and continued with the making of her movie. The plot of the movie itself is about conservatorship, and is an uncomfortable topic, especially when it is painted in such a positive light. Music's big sister is no more capable of taking care of Music than Music is, seeing how she has a history with alcohol abuse. Acting as if a person needs to be placed under a conservatorship just if they are nonspeaking is ridiculous. not allowing an adult to make decisions in life for themself is morally wrong in most situations. This movie is the equivalent to the Free Britanny movement- except if people were speaking about how good it was that Britanny spears was in her conservatorship. Please, if you are reading this, don't give Music any more revenue by watching it. Its not worth it and it is disgusting what it represents. I hope that next time someone chooses to make a movie that is highly offensive to the group of people that they are trying to represent, they listen to those people and change the movie. But I'm not done. No. If Sia had stopped there, I would still not condone watching this movie. But she partnered with Autism speaks, an anti-Autism organization. If you don't know, Autism Speaks is an organization that fearmongers parents into trying to get "treatment" for their children's autism and donate to them, where they can try to find a "cure" for autism. Autism isn't something that needs to be "cured." Autism is a part of the people that live with it. it isn't something that ruins their life. But Autism speaks clearly doesn't care. There is almost no autistic representation in the organization. If you want to know more, you can research about it yourself. Another problem with it was the bright colors, sounds, and lights without any warning. This is a problem because there are people with photosensitivity, but especially autistic people experience some senses stronger. this is gatekeeping who can even watch the movie, and many autistic people on social media have spoken about freaking out in those scenes because of the overstimulation. Sia most likely did not try to do this on purpose, but seeing as it was a movie about an autistic person supposedly for autistic people, there should have been a warning beforehand. That is about all that I can think of as to why you should Not watch this movie. If I find more reasons I will edit this review. I don't want anybody to believe I am "spreading hate" because that is not what this is. Music is a movie that is rooted in hate and fear of the autistic community. Please consider this when you are choosing if you want to watch this or not. I know this was a long essay- but I hope you read through this and came out with new perspective on the movie. Thanks.
