A summary of reviews I’ve read here: “THIS movie is SUPER-GREAT, HA-HA Fun-time, forever AND yes! Robots & HUMANS & dog/pig/loaf is favorite & SUPER-BEST part movie is greatest I have ever watched since today! Oh, this MOVIE? Best movie of ever! I hope one day to watch it!”
Seriously?
Having actually watched the film (an important step to be taken prior to leaving a review), I will say the film has a well traveled plot that follows the formula of most every animated film from the last few decades: “The current & the ever increasing use and/or abuse of (1)________, is steadily leading to the demise of (2)____________. While the last blank is “humanity,” the vast majority of the time (including this one), the first blank is largely & usually reserved for some portion of, or allegorical reference to, the environment, instead, this movie cashes in on another very real & equally self-inflicted apocalyptic situation that mankind tends to discover & then challenge to a high-speed game of chicken, the development of AI & what happens when robots realize they’re stronger, smarter, faster, more efficient, less destructive to their environment, than their creators, who, upon simple research into mankind’s early & recent behavior toward our planet, our narcissistic selves, & most abhorrent of all, our actions toward one another, be it in the name of greed for power & land or worse, in the name of some god invoked in order to justify the actions taken in acts of greed for power, land, & blood. The animation is good. The characters are animated in a very palatable way; not the 2D hand-drawn of yesterday or the CGI of today that can be so lifelike that it’s distracting, where one wonders why not cast in live action if the characters must be this life-like? The story is well-traveled, but that doesn’t mean that this film didn’t put their own entertaining spin on it, because they did and? It works. It’s chuckle funny through most of it’s run time with both action & snappy dialogue between the characters. I initially felt like I wouldn’t be able to associate the little brother’s voice with his character, as they originally felt mismatched, but that faded quickly. At times, the dad’s dialogue felt really pushed. I like the actor who does the voice (Danny McBride?) & think he’s hilarious, but he’s not normally the “dad”-type, so maybe that was my disconnect. Overall? Entertaining, easy to watch, the message isn’t so heavy-handed that it takes away from anything, & they managed to tell a near apocalyptic event story that you can watch without checking your blood pressure & having to take a Xanex due to stress afterward. Good little flick.
