I loved the first half of the film, which was fresh, well-paced and very authentic. However, the last half, particularly the final third of the movie, dragged and seemed to fall apart with pointless, insignificant subplots and flimsy character arcs that made me care less about the victims of the ‘Mother gang.’
Although I greatly admire Rebecca DeMornay’s intense and believable embodiment of Mother, some of the backwards decisions made by the other characters required me to suspend my disbelief too much for me to take the final thirty minutes of Mother’s Day seriously, so I ended up losing interest in what started as, and should have been, a far more promising and interesting remake.
