TLDR: Great game, disappointing story
Prey is an excellent, highly immersive game that had me riveted from start until *almost* finish. I was completely absorbed by the game and loved the story, learning about the crew, finding the few survivors and protecting them, bonding with them, and unraveling the mysteries of the story.
However, after all of that, I was extremely, and I mean extremely, unsatisfied with the ending. All of the endings really. There wasn’t much of a conclusion, it just ended in a rushed way, then credits rolled. But then the real ending came after the credits, which dramatically changed everything, and made me feel like everything I did, the dozens of hours I put into it, the time I spent scouring every nook and cranny of the the station- meant nothing. If you enjoy having a bunch of story threads and great character arcs abandoned in favor of-
[SPOILER (Non-specific spoiler)]
one of those cheap “none of it was real!” reveals, maybe you’ll like it, but for me I didn’t care about that, I cared about the story I was involved in, the choices I made, and the characters I grew close to. Honestly I could have probably tolerated it if they could have at least shown what happens in the end and how everyone is affected by your choice instead of just going straight to credits for that post-credit reveal.
I said this is a spoiler, but honestly I wish someone spoiled this for me, so I would have skipped this game instead of wasting 60-70 hours on it. What a shame, because the game is almost a masterpiece otherwise.
People might call me dramatic and say it’s just a game, but I spend 70 hours playing this, and for me, that’s months of playing the game. I don’t binge games like some people do, I sit with it and take my time, and it makes the story marinate and affect me more. If I had binged it like many gamers,m and beaten it over a week or two, might not have been as affected by it 🤷
