Slow, bad science/medicine, poor decisions by the characters, random disasters not rooted in reality or even hinted at in prior exposition (suddenly off course???). Had a potential solution already set up in the previously mentioned colony ship, and obviously had some survivors as evidenced by the message, so why not do a hail mary and evacuate ppl there to go to the KNOWN inhabitable world? Nope, it's better to ignore it in favor of a not particularly moving tragedy.
