"Apocalypse" was pretty fun but also a complete mess. People who want to see a Murder House/Coven crossover will be frustrated by how long it takes to get there. People who would prefer that this anthology show be an anthology show (me, for instance) will be baffled when this season starts off as that and then suddenly just becomes a completely different story with almost no warning.
The show spends three whole episodes letting you settle into a story about a fallout shelter before the witches from Coven walk in and pull the rug out from under you. From this point on, the season is entirely a flashback.
This is a huge problem because we watch the coven try to thwart the Antichrist for most of the season, but we already know he wins, meaning that the tension is pretty minimal for most of the season.
The other big problem is that the viewer is tricked into thinking they're watching one story, are suddenly thrown into another story with the assumption that they will return, and then slowly discover that, no, this is what the season actually is.
It feels like they wrote a season, only managed to come up with a few episodes, and then just daisy-chained it to their MH/Coven idea because they couldn't think of what else to do.
Also season 8 can't decide whether it wants to be a campy horror story or a straight-up farce, and as a result you're not really sure how to feel about what you're watching, or if you should care.
It's fun to watch, for sure, but I don't know that I'll be interested in revisiting this season at any point. Hope the next one's better.
