I didn't care for the game. I played Subnautica long before this, and I hoped this was somewhat like that. There're no threats at all in this game, and though it's pretty, it's also pretty boring.
Swim around, scan fish. Scan the circle. Scan the circle, scan the circle, scan - you guessed it - the circle. The camera angles for zoom scanning are also a hassle. The directions reversed like flight simulators unnecessarily. You want to swim around without the scanner out? You'll miss things that you feel compelled to scan. But for what purpose? You just want to get the 16th fish out of 47. Completionists will be hard pressed to find every creature, and even if you do, there's no reason to do it.
I found the characters moderately annoying. The main character whiny and mourning over a whale passing like she's so beyond bound to them she's suddenly massively depressed made me end up skipping the rest of the dialogue. She's obsessed with whales and neglecting her family at home for her own success and so weepy mopey late game it just makes me say "oh come ON." I started pressing R and F just to get beyond hearing them. I grew tired of her whining and softspoken squeaky feeling voice posing as empathetic. The voice acting was fine, but after a while you just want them to shut up.
Maybe I didn't care for it much because I already knew most of the creatures that I encountered in it? Learning about the depths they thrive at wasn't even slightly fascinating.
The music is pretty, as well, but I don't want tracks on the submarine shoved down my throat. If I were listening to them on Youtube, I might actually enjoy them. But every time I entered my boat, I would either pause them or turn the volume off. I want to be immersed, not basically a target for advertising. Give me the bubbling sounds of the water in the submarine any day over some woman singing *anything*.
Simply put, as I said above, it was pretty, and pretty boring.
