This movie pertains to a very particular sense of humor, and, for the majority of the people I've known, it takes at the very least a second watch to fully understand why this film was created. I believe that is because for the first viewing of any film we like to analyze and critique things like plot elements in order to understand what it is that we're watching.
Analyzing plot elements will not help you here 😂, and don't feel bad if you do not understand this film right away, or ever in all honesty. There really isn't much to understand, but there is tons to experience. It plays off of surreal, awkward life experiences that fill you with secondhand embarrassment and make you want to facepalm. But there is something all too familiar about it that makes you want to return for more. For me personally, I've felt like I've known several Napoleons throughout my life, as well as representations of the other characters, I've even been some of them at times. It's nostalgic in a way, even though these experiences weren't mine. They might as well have been, and I might as well have dealt with them with the same effortless awkwardness that these characters do.
It's quotable, hilarious, and even sentimental in a beautifully weird real way. I highly recommend this film, but I would also recommend not taking it or yourself too seriously while viewing. These characters take their lives pretty seriously which gives you as the audience the chance to have a break from the pressures of your own life to watch someone else dealing with theirs, awkwardness and all. I hope you enjoy it 🥰
