Chekka Chivantha Vaanam is a great entertainer. It has stunning acting especially by Aravind Swamy, Its well paced never moving too fast or too slow, AR Rahman's music is quite good and it is one of the best shot films I have seen in a long time. So, on a technical level, this movie ticks all the boxes but unfortunately it has one big gaping hole that is necessary for any good film to master. . . Character. Throughout the movie, things keep on happening to the characters but we don't feel anything because the director hasn't taken the time to develop his characters properly. We don't really understand them or their motivations or their relationships. For example, There is a scene in the movie where Arun Vijay's character's wife get wrongly convicted and thrown into prison, Then he starts crying. In this scene, I didn't feel sad like I was meant to because Mani Ratnam hadn't taken time to develop a relationship between them. So when this makes Arun Vijay's character angry I kept on asking myself "Why is he getting so angry" " He didn't seem to love her that much anyway". There are many more instances like this littered throughout the movie. I also thought that the music was used a little too much. Overall I would give this a 6/10
