Catcher in the Rye is a captivating story of someone struggling to find meaning in their life. Holden has never quite recovered from the death of his brother and his only real purpose seems to be belittling anyone who seems to have too much enthusiasm for anything - he refers to these people as “phonies”. This book is a true insight into anyone who’s had some kind of traumatic event happen in their life. You view yourself as being different and, in some cases, possibly superior to most people. Holden rationalises his brother’s death into this form of entitlement he holds over other people. By doing this he prevents himself from ever really applying himself in anything.
