Although I can feel empathy for the extreme hardships, suffering, trauma and loss in the novel and the brutality, destructiveness and senselessness of war and displacement, the main characters seemed to be cardboard stereotypes. I did not bond with them. The novel seemed more journalistic, a reporting of the tragedy rather than feeling the pain.
