When you first start out this game is incredibly fun. Frustrating, but fun. Much in the same way a typical RPG is. You start out underpowered, outgunned, and outmatched. But unlike a typical RPG where you grind and grind and grind with the hope of eventually becoming powerful enough to steamroll those enemies Witchfire does the exact opposite. You fight, you die, you fight, you die, you fight, you die... over and over again. When you do finally get enough Witchfire to level up your character it doesn't make YOU stronger it simply unlocks more enemies and makes THEM stronger. It also unlocks more traps, more roadblocks (Gatekeepers), and eventually something called a Calamity.
The Calamity is the final nail in the frustration coffin. If you ever do finally manage to clear a few areas and begin to explore the (tiny) map a Calamity event randomly occurs causing the screen to go red and dozens of demons to appear out of no where. At this point you have two options: Run across the map through camps of enemies to shoot some floating skull that ends the Calamity or try and kill 16 of the demons that appear. However, one hit from these demons will kill you, and then you start all over again, losing all your items and progress in the process.
I should also point out that the weapons are horrible. Your weapons vs their weapons is so out of whack. For example, you can get a rifle, but it's affective range is only 14m. That's it. If you try to shoot an enemy from 43 feet away it will take 1 out of 230 hp away. However that same enemy can hit you with an arrow with pin-point accuracy from (literally) across the map and cause 25% damage. And there's usually 3-4 of them shooting at you (along with other enemies). If you decide to jump in the middle to shoot at close range it's not much better. After a while you can level them up slightly, but they're still not great. Don't expect to get a double barrel shotgun that blows an enemy in half, because they just don't have that kind of power. Your enemies weapons do, but not you. Oh, and there's almost no healing either. Elixirs are hard to come by and they only restore 25% health.
Long story short, this game is not the game a lot of people (like me) will think it is. It's not a cool FPS with powerful weapons, RPG mechanics, and an elaborate story. In fact, the story you see in the trailer... that's it. That's all the game has. Think Doom 2016 with really underpowered weapons that are only affective up close. And instead of Doom Slayer getting new abilities and more health/armor throughout the game when you level up it just unlocks more Hell Knights and Cyber demons. And even if you do manage to defeat half of them and make some progress a Calamity event happens, your health drops to 10% and 16 Hell Knights come out of nowhere. Oh, and if you die you have to start the entire map over. Does this sound fun to you?
Oh, and one last point. I keep seeing people talking about how amazing the graphics are in this game... they're not. Not even close. Even the XBox Series S will laugh at these graphics. Don't get me wrong, they look okay (when the textures decide to finally load in), but everything is static and a few generations old. If you want to get an idea of these graphics just look at their previous game (Ethan Carter). Same exact graphics. They were amazing 10 years ago, but now they're just passable. Not trying to be negative here, I just don't want to see anyone fall for the "graphics are amazing" hype train. This game will likely run at 4k 60fps on a Series S. What does that tell you?
Please just do some research on this game before you buy it. I would refund it if I could.
