Dune 2020 movie - "Pray tell, what did I just watch?" 🤔
SPOILER ALERT: If you haven't seen the new Dune movie and don't want my poison pill review killing off your expectations, do not read this!
I will start my rant by stating that my wife and I LOVED the 1984 Dune movie adaptation, it resonated with me and I strongly related to Paul Atreides, with his newfound courage and deep spiritual arc. I can recite every piece of dialog by memory, and after 100+ times of watching the movie, I am always repulsed, inspired, and touched by it. I admit, this is perhaps an unfair starting point to judge a 2020 remake of the movie that connected with me in so many ways back then. Did I mention I LOVED the 1984 music score?
So we decided to watch it tonight on HboMax, and 15 minutes into it my wife says; "So glad we didn't blow $60 bucks to see it at the theater", as she fell asleep halfway through the "remake"! 😲 And "remake" is the kindest euphemism I can think of using to describe what I just witnessed, I am sure David Lynch must be wondering if Denis Villeneuve drank the pink Kool-Aid and is rolling in laughter; Certainly a vindication for him, who was vilified by the press for his interpretation, which I find FAR SUPERIOR to this new hyped-up take.
Where to start? IMHO, the 1984 actors skillfully communicated the emotion and gravitas of the Herbert novel characters, I easily became those characters and I felt what they felt. also, in the Lynch version, a lot of the dialog was out of the character's thoughts, a unique touch I LOVED, but no, no thoughts are heard in this one. And Paul? Well, he is a tiny, scrawny, barely 100 pound type of kid who would probably get bullied by the girls in school. He had none of the regal posture and manner of speaking Paul #1 had, and lacked the visible emotional arc we witnessed in the original Paul as he transformed into "Paul Muadib" after the death of his father.
Ho-hum, it was pretty much the same for all other main characters, very flat delivery of what should have been groundbreaking lines, and worst of all for me, Dune 2020 was simply an almost word for word, scene for scene, repeat of the 1984 movie, redone with lesser actors, albeit visually stunning.
The music score was laughable compared to Toto's timeless score and Brian Eno's desert theme; Actually the only musical piece here that was "ok", was the obvious copy of the "desert theme" by Eno - and Zimmer did not even have the foresight to do something more epic and memorable, it resembles the theme, but dies a quick death of being a lot more boring than the original.
Some of the worst offenders were; No guild navigators, no folding space scene, no emperor, but the straw that broke this camel's back was not making the movie long enough to see Paul's triumph over the Emperor since the movie ends abruptly right after he meets the Fremen - ??? WHAT ???
So there you have it, I am still in a drunken, IQ depleted stupor over having my expectations crushed by this, a much lesser successor, to what was a great movie for me. So long, and thanks for all the fish. 🐬🐬🐬
