A common criticism of this film, it seems, is that it makes a joke of a very serious problem. But therein lies the genius of the film. Romantic optimists would like to think that we would handle the apocalypse with reason and morality, but this makes the fundamental error in thinking of humans as creatures of reason and morality. The truth is, this film depicts how we would actually respond to the apocalypse. And how can I feel confident in asserting that? Because that's how we're actually responding to the climate crisis. There is a vast incongruity between how we ought to respond, and how we do/will -- and yes, that space can be filled with a mocking, nihilistic humour. And that is what this film is about.
