Would have been a beautiful testament to the love between a husband and wife who managed to keep married and raise a family despite incarceration. But that’s not what this “documentary” was about. This is really a story about two selfish, self-centered, ridiculous people who victimized their community, a bank, the bank employees, the taxpayers, the mother of Sibil (who got stuck raising this couple’s kids for 12 years), and the poor kids who were conceived even after these parents knew there would be no father in the home to raise them. The father could have been home with his family and saved the taxpayers years of incarceration costs and parole hearings if he had opted to plead guilty —they admitted they did the crime. Instead the community pays and pays and pays for both of their arrogance. Tone has not taught Sibil any humility— even her “forgive me”s are filmed and seem to be for effect rather than sincere. This woman has no right to play the angry victim or suggest she or her husband are being “enslaved”. She is nothing but a showboat who cares more about her image and self-promotion than she does any other factor. She appears to have learned nothing from her mistakes, her time or her husbands absence. Her own son even said their family was all about image. He seems I understand the real loss. There is PLENTY wrong with the criminal justice system— for both crime victims and perpetrators—- but her statement that unless you’ve been to prison yourself you can’t say “do the crime, do the time” is utterly ridiculous. That’s not how the world works. I wish I hadn’t wasted an hour watching this misguided and narcissistic “documentary”. Shame on Amazon for marketing it as “family deprived of a father”— with implication he was wrongfully incarcerated. But for the grace of God these people didn’t kill anyone while trying to steal. If you want a real documentary — watch Trial 4 on Netflix.
