Yesterday is a love letter to the Beatles. Those reviews that are angry that they didn’t go into what made the Beatles great? How the bloody hell do you do that when the Beatles never existed? Jack Malik is the phenomenon in this world. While his own songs are sweet but trash, his voice is lovely and honors the Beatles in a place where they are unknown.
Imagine waking up in a world where no one ever heard of The Beatles, or Coke (except as cocaine), or a variety of other little things we all take for granted. Imagine how small and empty the world would be without their music, which touched everyone. Malik is the fortunate one who has the voice to share this all and enrich this new world.
If you don’t like the film, that’s ok. But don’t criticize what is not possible in a new reality. It would be like criticizing a man without legs for not understanding what it’s like to walk. You can’t get what you never had.
