As a Chinese, I feel ashamed with this movie. This movie feels so pretentious. Chinese or HK cinemas used to be very good, but now it fills with bunch of CGIs. I don't hate CGIs, but Chinese or HK cinemas used to be all about martial arts. This has almost ZERO martial arts. What Jet Li for then? He really knows Shao Lin Kung Fu and he just becomes like an extra in this movie.
I remember watching an old Chinese TV series about FengShen YanYi when I was a kid and Jiang ZiYa is an awesome old dude full of wisdom. I remember this one scene where he's fishing using a straight bait, this is what makes Jiang ZiYa so famous about. If you play Warrior Orochi, Tai Gong Wang is Jiang ZiYa, see his main weapon, it's a fishing rod. But here, Jiang ZiYa's most famous scene is forgettable, even when they decided to use a legendary Chinese actor.
I also feel Chinese or HK cinemas nowadays are copying Hollywood with all those bunch of CGIs. This is why I said it feels so pretentious in the first place. Chinese or HK cinemas needs to find their real identity and stop copying Hollywood.
The costumes here is great. The plot feels too rush. The acting is good, but kinda clunky, maybe they haven't get used to it to act in all green screen room?
It's not a bad movie and if you have time, you should watch it. But, the beauty of Chinese or HK cinemas is gone in this movie (or most of modern Chinese or HK movies)
