Ok being a fan of the original I was especially excited for Wonder Woman 1984. The trailer was brilliant, the movie was set in the 80s another great plus, and the cast was packed. A recipe that was sure to please audiences. The movie, and I say this with much sadness, DID NOT live up to the hype that was buzzing around it for months. The action scenes disappointed, the story was unnecessary and didn’t win me over at any point. I care for these characters, but their choices and the plot of this film don’t not have me sitting at the end of my seat cheering for them. I feel Patty Jenkins was going for more of an abstract story and trying to send out a message of change for the audience; however, the movie just didn’t win me over, and thus didn’t really hit me where it was striving to. I also didn’t truly fall in love with the characters like I did with this movies predecessor. I often found myself questioning why and character would say something, act a certain way or make such a choice. There was a disconnect between me and the film. The action scenes aside, the actors did a great job, I applaud Pedro Pascal for his portrayal of Max Lord, though his backstory was very briefly explained. I feel if the movie had delved into his childhood and contrasted it with Diana’s we could have forged a strong baseline for our opposing sides. The same could be said for Kristen Wiigs character, her rational for not wanting to renounce her wish stemmed from not being called beautiful. The movie could have given her some more depth and, this may be cheesy but, utilized this to subtly embed some feminist tones about inner beauty: especially with the demographic this movie is pointed at this could have been a strategic move. I subscribed to HBOMax for this movie, but I recommend waiting till it is available on other streaming platforms. Overall this is an ok watch, but most definitely not the movie we deserve. It is not by any means a bad film, but ridding from the high of the first it just doesn’t hold up.
