Star Trek Discovery brings a new perspective to the Star Trek TV universe with strong female characters given a leading role rather then (more often than not) being placed in secondary role. Star Trek Discovery for the most part isn't as campy or overly patriarchal as the traditional TV series tended to be A lot of life long Star Trek fans tend to be critical or dismissive of the show, at least as far as reviews go, however Discovery has attracted a lot of new fans who are typically not fans of Star Trek universe outside of the Whedon movies Star Trek Discovery is a great show for those who are not typical Star Trek fans
