Do you want to be a film director? Are you a film director and do you need some inspiration/theory/intelligence/creativity? Get and read this book. Several times. And take notes. And then read it again. From Cassavetes to Kubrick, the personalities who created the film revolution in the 70s that gave us the great movies of the last forty years are interviewed. This is a spectacular piece of work and Gelmis has a generated--perhaps unknowingly--a textbook on how to make a film. The insight provided here is priceless and it applies, particularly, to those with more talent than money because a lot of young film directors start off with zero or little funding. It's never been easier to make a film than it is today (short films are regularly shot with iPhones ;long films are edited on Macs) so read the book and start writing and shooting....another endorsement came from a film professor at one of the top 10 schools in America, who saw the book when I was in class and then saw the notes I had taken from the book and asked for copies of both--it's that good. If you read one book on film this year, make it Gelmis' "The Film Director as Superstar"....it's fifty years old now, but it is timeless.
