Dear Michael and Virginia,
I will not be watching morning television any more. The ABC provides the only intelligent morning television, but the increasing Melbourne-centricity being displayed is making it as cringeworthy as the cashcow.
Michael, your desperately craven plea to an American singer this morning was deplorable. You should be ashamed. The incidence of snide anti-Sydney comments has increased over the last year or so, and has undermined my enjoyment of the show altogether.
You have both lived in both cities, as have I. You should therefore know that Sydney and Melbourne are conceptually completely different cities and should not be rationally compared on any level other than perhaps historically for colonial reasons. When I first came to Melbourne I could not believe that anyone takes this rivalry seriously. The cities have virtually nothing in common. You might as well compare Bathurst with Glasgow.
Anyway, since there is now nothing for me to watch on morning television, I guess all that's left for my morning news before leaving is the computer, and that will be the SMH, the Age, and The Guardian, I’m afraid.
"Good Morning Melbourne" has not been a productive show for ABC TV. Not at my place.
Regards,
John
