Actually this film has a nice backstory. They could really explore a lot of things to develop the story and characters, especially Abuella (with Pedro, the conquistadors and even the Madrigal's rooms). But sadly no, Disney kept the story flat, boring, and predictable. The pacing is typical for Disney, slow-paced in the beginning and rushed towards the end (even the most important scenes felt rushed! Aarrghh!)
I really wish they didn't go with that ending, I think that would be an even more powerful message for the viewers. The songs were decent but unmemorable, just like this film. Animation is gorgeous though, with lots of beautiful colors.
