This game is so good in some ways, and completely misses the mark in others. The combat, graphics, and story are all very good, but the combat can feel very frustrating as you are staggered by enemies and unable to do things for several seconds. I also felt very underpowered in terms of force abilities. I think it was a mistake to make a lot of lightsaber powers use force points. But being able to switch between single blade, staff and two blade attacks was definitely cool.
The voice acting, scenes, sound and music are all fantastic. It feels like Star Wars from the beginning.
The place I feel like the game really missed the mark is more from an rpg customization standpoint. Your skill point choices don’t really matter as by the end of the game you have the whole tree filled out. And all gear and lightsaber customization is pure window dressing. It has no statistical or gameplay benefit. I feel like this more than anything was the biggest missed opportunity in the game. While I spent a lot of time customizing the look of my lightsaber to try all the different combinations of colors, design and materials (which was super cool), it felt kind of empty because once it’s on your hip, the only thing you really see is the color of the blade. And it doesn’t matter for the game at all. I would have loved to see something like God of War where you have stats and can pick different play styles based on your gear and skill choices.
The slide games on ramps drove me nuts. I was terrible at them and kept sliding off the sides and missing jumps. The difficult ones would take me forever to get to the end and just felt like a chore by how hard they were. The Holomap was cool, but somewhat confusing to really find your way around due to the complexity of the levels. Lack of fast travel was super annoying. Like if you missed a chest or secret you have to play through the entire level again and some areas are super hard to find your way back to.
Overall it’s great fun, but it still feels very shallow for an rpg which is what I was getting it for. There are no character decisions; no branching stories, and no variation on play style. You basically stab everyone to death with your lightsaber and use force powers to solve puzzles.
