I don’t lightly toss out five star reviews. I’m a writer, author, and story developing fiend. When everyone shills about how amazing a movie is, I normally hate it. I hated Frozen, refused to watch the second. I say this, to build an understanding that I’m not easily impressed, and a handful of cute songs or a cute critter is not going to sell me on an awful story.
That said, this movie definitely has both those elements; a cute critter that sings cute songs. Fortunately, there is real story here that goes well beyond just being cute. It shows far more believable characters, with a past and something to heal from. It shows an interracial couple, without coming off as “woke” or “preachy”. Each character has their own struggles; they have wants, and they have their fears that they need to overcome.
This movie blew away my expectations of what I expect to find in movies these days and while there are very few movies I actually want to see, this one was a good one.
