I remember watching this on FilmStruck during my 2nd year of high school, and I absolutely fell in love with it. The Fats Waller music coupled with the industrial noises, the Chaplin-esc nature that's at the same time very grotesque and haunting, the themes of adult/fatherhood, destruction of youth, intimacy, the loss of one's sexual satisfaction in life, the yearning for an escape, and the potential for hope at the end of the tunnel - all come together to produce a surrealist nightmare that at first seems eerie and mundane, then descends into total horrific madness (like most dreams). Utterly beautiful. Would recommend.
