I finally watched kubo. I liked it. the animation is beautiful, the story is engaging (for the most part) and the voice acting is very good. the sisters' design is cool and threatening, the action is well paced and nicely shot and there are some visual moments and details that are just fantastic. a few issues, though: the bad guy turns into a fish. really? the big bad is a fish? come on, you can do better. his motivations weren't the best either. not bad, just meh. what's the deal with the armour? that turned out to be pointless. you could see the monkey twist coming a mile away and when that hit, the beetle twist was a given. but what really bugs me is the name: "Kubo and the Two Strings". his samisen has 3 strings. it is at the end when he finally add 2 strings (which by the way, should be too short to work), but immediately adds a third. what's with the name? again, it's a good movie. if you like animation, this is a must.

the "bad guys" are just bad 'cause the plot says so. the "heroes" are awful. the songs are annoying. how is this a thing?

It's still too early to tell. I am curious about the character changes and how them being grown ups will develop in a different story, without the teen angst, search for ones identity and such. Those where key elements in the original. Let's just wait and see, who knows, it might be good. My only issue is with the colour treatment, the fps and the sound. It has a late 80's early 90's cheap, late night b-tvmovie feel. Almost like skinemax or a golan-globus "karate-cop" movie. Staying positive, though.
