First video game, ever, in a history of buying hundreds of titles where I want my money back. I've loved golf video games going all the way back to ones in the arcades and on the Apple ][, to the bar-sports one with the ball you zing with up to four friends, to casual golf games on Mac, PC, Playstation and, yes, former Nintendo titles.
This one, Mario Golf: Super Rush isn't golf, it's just... it's, it's a ridiculous trying to do something that isn't golf at all. It works neither for the casual golfer who's probably a child - and to be clear, I have two, one 9 one 7, or for the golfer who likes to goof on video games which, I'd like to add, I actually PLAY golf IRL. I play golf but I'm not that good or that serious but still, would like some competence in every and any golf video game to be, well, you know, golf-like... this isn't.
Most video games I wait to come out, regardless of platform. I do so to read reviews and to get a sense of what the people have to say. For some reason I blindly ordered Mario Golf for release day. My god, never again. This is an embarrassing if not rather terrible title. It's certainly not worth the $60 they're charging of the $50 I paid, it's not even worth $20 or $10 TBH.
I've purchased Switch titles for 1/10th the cost of Mario Golf: Super Rush that was far, far better than this in terms of gameplay and playability not to mention wonder and joy. Have you ever played Wii Sports Golf? THAT is a good, enjoyable golf game, I loved that game. It was fun, fun to play, fun to jump into at any time regardless of your skills or intent, it was fun for all ages and all levels. Fun.
MGSR lacks any fun. It's a drudgery of a game. It lacks wonder, no joy, just frustration, and is a painful game whether you're 50 like me, 40 like my wife, 9 or 7 like my sons. They all hated it, but none as much as me, looking forward to a golf-like game which this isn't, not even close.
[sigh] How did such a usually brilliant company like Nintendo let this happen? Seriously?! We only hope maybe they can add a patch so you can, you know, play just regular fun golf be there silly obstacles with swing and other stats on-screen that EVERY GOLF GAME HAS because that's important. Make a golf game silly, sure, but this was just terrible
We figured out who this is for, the person with a LOT of disposable income who just wants to own every Nintendo Mario title even if they don't play it. It's like having a collectors card but it's of bench players who've never been in the game, an appropriate analogy as this video title shouldn't have made a cut to be in the game either. If you have $60 to literally just burn and you don't care what you do with it, buy MGSR. Otherwise, find something, anything else to spend money on.
