I love forest Whitaker in a lead mob boss type role I really do. His eye is absolutely intimidating beyond letting Private Pyle saying “He’s above him.” An original Goodfella like Paul Sorvino is a nice touch as well. Depicting Malcom X and how the muscle of The Nation Of Islam operated back then keeps you interested. Also entertaining just to portray how much Black American gangs and Italians really conflicted in the 60s. I think it would be really cool if they worked into the end of the decade with some type of Black Panther Party affiliation; depending how long this one airs.
3 stars because of the music. Hate to say it but the hardcore mumble rap is just so out of place. I mean they almost completely ignore what Harlem was known for in this aspect. I realize the Renaissance was a few decades before; however there’s a lot of blues/soul music that would have dramatized scenes so much better. Just isn’t fitting to the era at all. I guess after finishing up to the end on season 4 of Snowfall; and how well their soundtrack stuck to funk/soul/early hip hop I come to expect this IMO. Also why I am itching to see a film/series that portrays the Black Panthers in entirety.
