Out of the gate this game felt like what I was expecting Death Stranding to be, a creepy and disorienting Sci-fi journey towards something large that controlled your fate. With so many movies/tv shoes lately doing the Ground Hog's Day theme, such as Edge of Tomorrow, Russian Doll, Palm Springs, its pretty cool to see someone attempt a similar theme in a video game.
There are a few mechanics that you must get used to. Every time you die, you start over. Lowest level of health, basic pistol, and most of your items gone, save for ether and key items (area unlocks). That's pretty intimidating, but fear not. There are several checkpoints that help you save your progress, though at first they may appear subtle.
The biggest one is suit augmentation gear. When you reach these checkpoints you will not lose it if you die and these give you new access to major and minor parts of most maps. The second placeholder is unlocking types of weapons and items. Once you have discovered them, you can easily find them again in the game. Third is weapon traits. You must continually use a weapon with a particular trait until you fully unlock it. When you find that gun again, you won't need to grind to unlock its full potential. Lastly there's the scout logs, ship logs, lore / research on creatures and glyphs you find in the game. None of these get wiped when you restart and do help you feel a sense of project, despite the reset button that is death.
I tend not to enjoy survival games because they are procedural and after a while, start to feel hollow and devoid of content. This game is gorgeous and does a great job of having procedurally generated maps connect seamlessly while still giving you a solid story. The frustration comes when you spend hours fighting things, collecting upgrades so you can handle tougher areas, only to die and have to start over. The whole point of the game though, as well as all of the Edge of Tomorrow type stories. You have to learn from your mistakes. And the additional challenge is the next time you restart, you'll get a different set of maps, gear, items. But when you do finally defeat a boss, unlock new gear, and hit that progress checkpoint, it feels amazing.
Kudos to the team that made this. Its a great sci-fi, lite-horror survival game. Excellent animation, environments, atmosphere, story, and mechanics and is a great milestone for PS5 games and they high quality they promised to deliver.
