The critics are out of touch. Placing the fantasy of magic in a contemporary setting is creative and within the zeitgeist of the D&D, Magic the Gathering, gaming generation. There is no need to rubbish it as a “police procedural”, whatever that really means. I thought the action scenes were a bit close-quartered, and the humour ran over at times when just the easy, quick quips kept the pace up, and Will Smith was too Will Smith/James West, while we did not have enough (dialogue) from Noomi Rapace, but it was good ride, Joel Edgerton was surprisingly believable, the backstory was intelligently unfolded, and it left me glad there were avenues clearly left open for sequels.
