Watched "Aami" the malayalam movie made on the life of writer Madhavi kutty, who also wrote in English in the name of Kamala Das. I can only say my esteem for this lady writer came several notches down and I really could not figure out what kind of love she was seeking and why she changef religion. Converting a religion at an older age as a widow, just due to a senseless infatuation for a younger man who can speak or sing urdu song well, is kind of stupudity and informing public that changing religion is like changing a shirt! Elsewhere she give reason for chane of religion as seeing north Indian Muslim girls wearing mehandi and bangles on hand. She came out to me like a constantly infatuated insecure and confused person who never decided what she wanted in life. That young man with clipped beard and topi and recite laboured urdu poetry look very similar to a living politician, and I wonder it is part of film makers imagination or some grain of truth.
The only people came out wirh flying colour is people of my State Kerala in the film and outside after seeing it. There was no violence or protest while there is enough to protest for both ill informed muslims and Hindu. Wonder what would have happened if the film was in Hindi and released in cow-mulla belt!
