2020-02-25 - before the first DLC. It's fun and provides a serious challenge. Many creative ideas and a mechanical depth. I got a lot out of it and think it's above average for a TBT game. As others have noted, at this point the game is basically unfinished and needs more work. I'm hoping I can review again after the DLCs drop.
Finding good combinations to cross-class soldiers was a real standout in my game experience.
2020-03-11 After the Blood and Titanium DLC. The overall balance of the game is dramatically improved with the DLC and the accompanying FLC. Also notable is the change is having assault rifles shred armour, which has a really positive impact on game pacing and improves starter weapon viability. There a few issues with the damage output on some weapon types but unless you are reading this the same month that I'm writing this, it's very likely that this will change.
The game is still VERY buggy. While I continue to leave the game at 4 stars, I would also like everyone to be fully aware that the development team is obviously treating 2020 as a development year. This still doesn't feel like a final product in execution. In, at least, three aspects of content (distinct from execution) the game still feels like its in beta: 1) lack of enemy variety and their on the rails evolution does little to mitigate this; 2) customization options for soldiers; 3) soldier equipment, esp. poor variety of weapon types and minimal modification options (none for weapons and limited armour modules).
You may love it but it can be hard to love.
