Usually series like to adapt a novel, in some cases this can be acceptable, as long as it's respectful of the author and their works.
It's not acceptable when an egomaniac with no actual skill, understanding or even a liking of the original works decides he knows what the story should have been instead of the man who wrote it.
The only way to do it properly is to do it properly, be faithful to the original works and trust the reason that it's being made into a live action show in the first place is that it's good and doesn't need messing with.
This show, just adds in a ton of stuff which not only isn't relevant to the original story, it also negates a huge amount of it. Masses in fact.
It also suffers from breaking the 1st rule of writing: Show, don't tell.
Let's take a story all about subtle character dynamics set in a world where everyone is quite uptight about protocol and relationships and just sex it up. Cos sex is better! Why bother to keep the world Robert Jordan wrote intact, we should make it just the same as modern day living with tinder.
Rand, Perrin and Mat are changed dramatically from their original characters, all within the first episode in some bizarre attempt to modernise a fantasy, medieval period drama. 2 of them are in relationships that didn't happen. Mat from an abusive family, just for giggles, nothing to do with the original works and doesn't at all fit his happy prankster personality. Backstory matters, changing it dramatically without even knowing why you're doing it is just stupid.
There's more depth to the issues, again related to setting and a complete lack of understanding of it. A silly excuse of oh well everyone was married young in the past, which is just not true and negates the actual steps involved in getting married which include things like not still being an apprentice as you can't pay for a family as one. Apprenticeships in the medieval times were bought, the apprentice would have absolutely nothing to their name and so could not get married.
Baffling lack of thought put into the changes.
And so they missed out the myrddraal, the key to it all in favour sex scenes instead.
The actors are really good, very committed to their roles. But that doesn't stop the story being spoiled by appalling writing.
