Im gonna be real, when i first heard about The Lion Guard, i thought it was a kinda okay idea. I wasnt planning to enjoy in as much as i have. For example, i love The Lion King, The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride and The Lion King 1/2. Then i hear about a "the lion king reboot tv show that involves Simba's son" and i was like "WHEN THE HECK DID HE HAVE A SON?!"
I got the mini movie "The Return of the Roar" a little while after i gave birth to my daughter. She couldnt crawl and couldnt lift her heard very well. But sure enough, i put on The Lion Guard, and as soon as the Zuka Zama song comes on, my daughter lifts her head and watches the show/movie.
Now my daughter is almost 3 yrs old, and we'll basically watch season 1 and 2 (because season 3 isnt out yet) every night after i get off work. She loves everything about it and im able to get into the music.
As for the storyline, i believe The Lion Guard takes place somewhere during The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride. The reason i believe that is because in Season 1, there is an episode that involves Zira, Kovu and the other outsider lions. Kovu even mentions about possibly seeing Kiara again when Kion says his father, Simba, may be able to allow the outsider lions back into the Pridelands in return for giving the female hyena and her pack their watering hole. Plus when you compare the 2 voices of Kiara (yes, i know they are obviously different actresses, but even so) the voice of Kiara in Simba's Pride has a more childish voice than the Kiara of The Lion Guard.
I hope my review was helpful and informative. If you have not seen The Lion Guard, i would recommend it. As someone who grew up with The Lion King, the show brings me back into my childhood. Therefore i can enjoy it with my daughter. My only thing is i would prefer hearing Matthew Broderick sing again as Simba rather than Rob Lowe (nothing against Lowe, just sticking by my childhood 😊).
