I am from Korean immigrant family so I needed to watch the movie to figure out what the hype was about.
First of all, this movie is not for you if you are type of person who wants "ending". Although I can definitely relate myself to the family in the movie, I was, too, disappointed by the ending of the movie. There is no resolution, no 'lived happily ever after', no knot to tie the story that went on for last 2 hours.
One good side of not having the "ending" is that we can believe that this family carried on their everyday life even after this movie was over.
Other than the ending issue, the movie is a bit slow-burn. But I do think it portraited the traditional gender role & traditional family/cultural values of Korea very well. If you are from an immigrant family, you will see yourself in the movie. For people who is not an immigrant, this movie can be boring and tiresome.
Just a little tip for people who has never immigrated or lived in foreign countries before, try to imagine you moved to out-of-no-where desert in one of African/European/Asian countries where you don't have any friends, family with 2 kids and husband who only goes after his own dream who thinks being successful is the only way to prove to his family member that he is the dad and husband (very traditional gender role in older generation of Korean males) but continues to fail. This imagination could help you step into the characters' roles.
If you can't imagine yourself moving to a foreign country, it would be better just go find another movie.
