I watched this film last night and I must say, I was impressed.
The characters in the film were not boring and utterly useless. I actually cared for them and was rooting for them to survive.
One thing that stood out the most for me, and this is a quality I long for in horror films: It was not predictable!!! There was one scene in the film where I suspected one of the monsters to appear but didn't, and the first person view of the camera in that scene made my toes curl; my girlfriend sitting beside me watched in terror as the director played with our emotions until eventually the monster won.
All in all, this is a great film and I'll award it 8/10.
The only thing I did NOT like in the film was the CGI. The monsters were terrifying, but the moment I spotted bad CGI I was not scared anymore. It reminded me of Iron Man during the airport scene in Captain America: Civil War.
