This show is trying way too hard to relate to the younger crowd. Instead it has a weird take on highlighting political issues as well as the Gen Z experience. You can also tell the writing staff is majority white due to the constant white perspective we are forced to look through. For example, the white mother taking the role as the “white savior” in many scenes where Ginny is put in a situation that could lead to a hate crime. The stereotype of Ginny’s dad not being around. The classmate saying to her face that she wants to be with a black man so that she would have mixed kids and the people not correcting her. They try to be diverse but as always, the main cast is white or mixed. The ones who have cultural relevance are side characters. Aside from that, the “romantic” plot lines are written from a male gaze. That one guy with repeated rape-y tendencies for example. The LGBTQ+ representation is from a loud white woman perspective. Throughout the show, its main points just rub me the wrong way. Netflix needs to hire better writers.
